I was camped about 200 yards into the Walk-in camping area near the streets called
3:00 and
Oblivion. There were about 30,000 people at Burningman, but almost no one camped
in the
Walk-in area, and those that did were close to their cars. The only problem was
the wind.
I had built a shade structure out of lumber (8 foot 2 x 2's), re-bar pounded into
the playa, thick rope
and a shock-corded tarp. I put my little mountaineering tent under this thing
and felt kind of smug...
until, on the second night, a HUGE wind storm came up, and one of the 2 x 2's
snapped.
The whole thing fell down. 3:00am. I put on my painter's dust mask, a pair of
swimming goggles
and crawled out of the mess, looked around, laughed and laughed. Then I got on
my
bicycle and rode towards the lasers and the sounds and the flames. It was a great
night.
